It was refreshing to hear amongst all the materialism in today’s society, that a little girl somewhere in the US asked on her 5th birthday if all kids receive birthday gifts. As nearly 13m children in the US live at or below the poverty level, barely affording food, housing or education, gifts are not a priority.

After her question “why can’t we give them gifts?” her parents created a website to donate surprise birthday gifts to underprivileged, seriously ill or physically challenged children through charities.

Donors make a donation and a child receives a personalized card and an award-winning book tailored to their age and gender. Gifts are varied according to age and the donor can choose to give the gift to a child that shares their birthday or their first name.

It is heartwarming to hear that a recent gift from the website On Your Birthday was delivered to a young lady whose mum was reduced to tears as she could not even afford a basic birthday party or a present.

May I encourage everyone who reads this blog to follow the example of Mary Cloyd who when planning a surprise 80th birthday party for her dad told all 100 guests to instead make a donation to the On Your Birthday site as ‘he doesn’t need a thing and will enjoy kids getting a birthday gift’.

I just read about an artist called Kimberley Petruska who not only provides beautifully crafted plates and table settings but also has a business in decorative wall painting. She also has several childrens themes and those who can afford it in New York can have her work her magic on their homes. She famously painted Tuscan murals with fruit and flower arrangements on the walls of the Andretti family home which was then featured on HGTV.

If you would like a superbly original personalized kids gift, and can convince her to come to your neighbourhood (!) I would say you would struggle to find something as beautiful for a child’s room as the decorative wall painting shown here.

For the kid who has everything, it’s time to get personal! A delightful article I read recently by Chris Robertson really highlighted why personalized kids gifts mean so much. As well as setting out ideas for personalized gifts for Christmas, Weddings and Birthdays, he points out that whenever you give a personalized gift, it forever links you to your recipient, and every time they see it, they will think of you. This can make your unique gift be treasured. He also reminds us how digital imaging technology now means that nearly any gift can be personalized.

In the case of kids gifts, I will forever treasure items which were given to me by family members long gone, particularly engraved pieces of jewellery, or a family friend who gave me a teddy with my initials embroidered on it, these small touches really make the gift your own when you are a kid and it stands out. In years to come, I would hope that the personalized toy box I gave my goddaughter will always remind her of me, although I don’t see her often enough. I think it is fair to say as Chris Robertson points out that any gift that has that personal touch always remains special, even when you are a kid.
